Doctor found guilty of manslaughter for administering cytokine-induced killer cell therapy injections

Dr. Mak Wan-ling was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence for administering an experimental immunity boosting therapy, and was sentenced to 3.5 years imprisonment.   A news article concerning the case can be found here.


The first trial in 2017 resulted in a hung jury in rspect of Dr. Mak, while her two co-defendants , Dr. Stephen Chow Heung-wing, and laboratory technician Chan Kwun-chung were convicted.  Prior to the present trial, Dr. Mak had appealed to the Court of Final Appeal, in which the Court of Final Appeal clarified the essential elements of the offence of gross negligence manslaughter -- see the judgment in HKSAR v Mak Wan Ling FACC 3/2019, which can be found here.


Peter Duncan SC represented Dr. Mak in both trials and the appeal before the Court of Final Appeal.
